# RoomDisk: help, questions and pricing (full text) --- Source: https://roomdisk.com/help/ ## Get started: pair two devices - Open roomdisk.com/app on the device that will keep the files and tap The storage disk. It shows a QR code. - On the phone or computer with the files, scan that code. A phone’s Camera app works: tap the roomdisk.com link that pops up. RoomDisk opens and shows its own code. - On the storage disk, tap Scan reply and hold the phone’s screen up to its camera. (No camera there? Tap the share button on the phone and open the link on the disk device, or use Paste code.) - The first time, the disk asks Allow this phone? Both screens show the same 4-digit number: if they match, tap Allow. Then both say Connected: choose files and send. Each file is checked when it lands. Both devices need to reach each other: the same Wi-Fi, or one device’s hotspot (no data plan needed). To reach your disk from another network, there’s RoomDisk Anywhere. The camera only turns on when you tap a scan button, and turns itself off after two minutes. Nothing is recorded. If you’d rather not use a camera, Paste code and the share button do the same job. The first time a device connects, the disk asks you to Allow it. Both screens show the same 4-digit number: if they don’t match, tap Don’t allow. After that it’s remembered: it connects without asking and can see and change files. Remove a device under Devices on the disk; it’s disconnected at once. ## Connect again without scanning No. Scan once: after that, a remembered phone finds your disk by itself whenever RoomDisk is open on both on the same Wi-Fi, usually in a second or two. Without internet (a hotspot with no data) you scan as the first time. Prefer never to touch a server? Turn off Connect without a code in the disk’s Settings. - How it finds the disk: both devices share a secret from the first pairing. The phone sends one small locked message through RoomDisk’s relay; the relay passes it along but can’t read it, and only your disk can answer. - Same Wi-Fi only, unless you have Anywhere: the quick reconnect connects over your home network; files never travel through the internet. - One tap if it didn’t happen by itself: your disk is listed under Your disks on the phone. Tap it to connect. - Rather never touch a server? Turn off Connect without a code on the disk, and pair with codes each time. ## Send photos and files - Tap Photos & files (or Folder on a computer, or drop files onto the page). To send a folder’s new photos every time you connect, pick it once under Auto send. - Watch the progress: speed and time left are shown. Keep both screens on until it finishes. - When it’s done, the phone says how many files are safe to delete, with a receipt you can download. On iPhone, for exact originals, tap Options in the photo picker and choose Current, or pick from the Files app. Otherwise iPhone may send converted copies. ## Is it safe to delete? RoomDisk checks each file’s exact contents on the sending device. The disk writes it, reads it back and checks it again. Only when both match is the file counted as safe to delete. Use Backed up? on the phone to check any files against the disk by content, not by name. Every batch also writes a receipt on the disk, listing each file that was checked. ## Big files and interruptions If the link drops (Wi-Fi, a locked screen, a closed tab), nothing is lost: pair again and send the same files. Each one continues from where it stopped; files already on the disk are skipped. Short trips to another app are fine: the other device waits up to 45 seconds for it to come back. ## Browse, preview and stream Open Files on a connected device to browse the disk: folders per device, thumbnails, search, sort, grid or list. Tap a photo for full screen; swipe or use the arrow keys for the next one. Videos and music play straight from the disk and you can skip anywhere, without downloading first (after you’ve opened RoomDisk once on that device). Select files to download, rename, move into folders or delete. Only remembered devices can change files. ## Watch videos from the diskTap a video in Files and press play. The player asks the disk for just the parts it needs, so long videos start quickly and you can jump ahead. ## Use an old phone or tablet as the disk - Plug it in and open RoomDisk; choose The storage disk. - Tap Disk mode: a calm, dark full-screen view that keeps the screen on and shows only what’s happening. - iPhone and iPad: add a RoomDisk shortcut to the Home Screen (Share › Add to Home Screen) so the files are kept, and use Guided Access to keep RoomDisk on screen. - Android: pin the app on screen. Computers: just leave the window open. Phones pause web pages that aren’t on screen. Keep RoomDisk open on the disk while files are moving. ## No internet? Use a hotspotTurn on one device’s personal hotspot and join it with the other. Pairing and transfers work exactly the same; nothing uses mobile data. Open RoomDisk once while online first, so it’s saved for offline use. ## Reach your disk from anywhere With RoomDisk Anywhere ($29 a year), turn on Reach from anywhere in the disk’s Settings. Devices you paired and allowed once at home then list the disk under Your disks: tap it to connect from any network. The connection is still direct and private between your devices. Keep RoomDisk open on the disk while you use it. Big files wait for Wi-Fi, so your mobile data is spared. Some networks (many mobile carriers, strict office or hotel Wi-Fi) block direct links. There you still see your folders and small previews; opening, saving and sending wait for another Wi-Fi. ## Protect the disk with a password - On the disk, open Settings and tap Set up under Password protection. Choose a password of at least 8 characters. - Save the recovery key it shows you (download or copy it). If you forget the password, tap Forgot the password? on the locked disk and enter the key to choose a new one. - RoomDisk locks every file already on the disk, then everything that arrives. The disk asks for the password whenever it opens and locks itself after 15 minutes without use; Lock now locks it straight away. Saving everything, or deleting or moving many files at once, asks for the password again. - Other devices can still send files to it. To see, open, download or change files, nearby or over Anywhere, they enter the password first. ## Only new files, copies and health checks - Only what’s new: pick your whole camera roll. Big files the disk already has are recognised by name, size and their first and last 256 KB, so they aren’t read again. - Two copies: after a send, the phone says how many files are now on two or more of your spare disks. In Details, put these on another spare disk too makes the second copy. - Empty files: 0-byte files (usually a damaged card or an interrupted copy) are flagged and never counted as safe to delete. - Health check: about once a month, while the disk is idle, it re-reads every file, makes sure each is unchanged, and tells you if anything changed. - Checksum lists for film work (Pro): under Receipts, Create writes the checklist film crews hand over with footage, covering every file. ## Free up storage on your phoneAfter a send, the summary lists what’s safe to delete. Delete those in Photos or your file manager (iPhone keeps them in Recently Deleted for 30 days). Never delete files that aren’t marked as checked. ## Troubleshooting - Devices won’t connect, or a transfer is stuck? Every fix - All questions Still stuck? Email hello@roomdisk.com. On a failed connection, “Copy debug report” gives us what we need (no addresses or file names). ## Try it with the two devices you havePay once, keep it. Nothing to install, no account. Open RoomDisk --- Source: https://roomdisk.com/faq/ ## Using RoomDisk **Are my files uploaded anywhere?** No. Files go straight from one of your devices to the other over a private connection. RoomDisk has no server that stores them, and full files never pass through one. **Do I need to install an app?** No. RoomDisk runs in the browser on iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac, Windows and Linux. You can add a shortcut to your Home Screen or desktop so it opens like an app, offline too. **Do both devices need the same Wi-Fi?** Both devices need to reach each other: the same Wi-Fi, or one device’s hotspot (no data plan needed). To reach your disk from another network, there’s RoomDisk Anywhere. **Do I have to scan a code every time?** No. **What if I delete something by mistake?** Deleted files go to Recently deleted on the spare disk for 30 days. Open Files on the disk, tap Recently deleted, then Put back. **How do I know my spare disk is still healthy?** On the disk, open Settings and tap Check now. RoomDisk reads every file back and tells you if anything changed or is missing, so you can replace a failing drive while you still have the originals. **Does it work without internet?** Yes, after the first visit. Turn on one phone’s hotspot, join it with the other device, and pair as usual. Nothing goes over the internet. **How do I know a file arrived intact?** The sending device checks each file’s exact contents; the disk writes the file, reads it back and checks it again. Only files whose checks match are marked “safe to delete”, and each batch gets a receipt. **What happens if the transfer is cut off?** Pair again and send the same files: RoomDisk continues each file from where it stopped instead of starting over, and skips files the disk already has. **Can I protect the disk with a password?** Yes, on every plan. In the disk’s Settings, set a password: every file is locked on that device, the disk asks for the password when it opens, and other devices, nearby or over Anywhere, must enter it before they can see the files. You also get a recovery key, shown once: save it, because it’s the only way in if the password is forgotten. **Is the connection private?** Yes. The connection between your two devices is always locked. The pairing codes travel face to face (one screen scanned by the other’s camera), and each device checks it’s talking to the one whose code it scanned, so nobody can slip in between. **Can I see my files from my phone later?** Yes. Connect to the disk and open Files: folders, thumbnails, full-screen photos, and videos that play straight from the disk. **What can be the spare disk?** Any device with a modern browser: an old phone, a tablet, a laptop or a desktop. On a computer in Chrome or Edge it can save to a normal folder; elsewhere it keeps files inside the browser. **What’s the best device to use as the disk?** An old laptop or desktop in Chrome or Edge, saving to a folder on a second drive or a USB drive: the files stay normal files you can see, and there’s plenty of room. An old phone works too; keep it plugged in. Safest of all: two disks, for example the laptop plus an old phone as a mirror, before you delete anything from your phone. **Does it back up automatically?** No. RoomDisk copies the files you choose when you open it; it’s a manual copy, not a background backup. Phones don’t let websites run in the background. ## Plans and payment **Is Pro a subscription?** No. RoomDisk Pro is one payment of $19 ($14.99 at launch) and it’s yours to keep. Only RoomDisk Anywhere is yearly ($29 a year), because it’s the part you use from other networks. **Is there a free version?** No. RoomDisk Pro is a single payment, not a subscription, and there are no trials. The help guide shows exactly how pairing, sending and checking work, so you know what you get before you buy. **Can I get a refund?** Purchases are final. If something is wrong with your purchase, email us and we’ll make it right. **How do I sign in on another device?** With the name you chose and your 12-character passcode. There’s no email account or password to manage. **What if I lose my passcode?** Look for the passcode file you downloaded or the email you sent yourself. Still stuck? Email hello@roomdisk.com with your Stripe receipt. ## Privacy and security **Can RoomDisk see my files?** No. There is no RoomDisk server in the path of your files. They go straight between your devices, privately. **What does RoomDisk Anywhere send through the internet?** Only two short connection messages, locked with a key that only your devices have, passed on by RoomDisk’s doorbell and never kept. Files still go directly between your devices. **Are files locked on the spare disk?** If you set a password in the disk’s Settings, yes: every file and its name is locked on that device. Without one, they’re normal files (or kept inside the browser), protected by that device’s own screen lock. **What if I lose a phone that was remembered?** On the disk, open Devices and forget it. If Anywhere is on, also use “Lock out all devices” in Settings. ## Try it with the two devices you havePay once, keep it. Nothing to install, no account. Files go straight between your two devices over a connection that is always locked. On the same network they never leave it. - No one in the middle. Pairing codes work once and expire in two minutes. They pass face to face, from one screen to the other’s camera (or through a share you send yourself), and each device checks it’s talking to the one whose code it scanned, so a device in between can’t pretend to be either one. - New devices are allowed, not assumed. Scanning a code starts a connection; the first time a device connects, the disk asks you to Allow it before it can see, open or change anything, and both screens show the same 4-digit number so you can check it’s the device in your hand. An allowed device is recognised every time it connects. Only allowed devices can change files or connect remotely, and Remove under Devices disconnects one at once. - Bulk-change alarm. If a connected device deletes, moves or renames many files within a minute, the disk pauses and asks you first, and deleted files stay in Recently deleted for 30 days. - Every file checked. On the sending device, and again on the disk after writing. Each batch gets a receipt. - Password protection (optional). Set a password in the disk’s Settings and every file, with its name, is locked on that device. The password itself is never stored or sent anywhere. The disk asks for it when it opens, and every other device, nearby or over Anywhere, must enter it before it can see, open, download or change files. - No trackers. The app loads nothing from anyone else: no ads, no tracking, no third-party code. ## A copy at someone else’s home A locked mirror keeps a copy of your files on someone else’s spare disk, sealed with your mirror key: each file is locked in pieces, with a random name, and the list of what they are is locked too. Their device can store and hand them back, but never open them. The key stays on your disk and with you; with it, a new disk can bring everything back. ## Erasing a disk Erase everything (Settings) removes every file RoomDisk wrote, checks that none is left and gives you a report. On a password-protected disk the key goes first, so anything left on the storage chip can never be read. ## Connecting again, and RoomDisk Anywhere After the first scan, a remembered device finds your disk by itself: on the same Wi-Fi with any plan, and from another network with RoomDisk Anywhere. Two short connection messages pass through RoomDisk’s doorbell, locked with a key only your devices hold. It (and the services that help your devices find each other) can see your internet address, not your files or what the messages say. Files go directly between your devices. Prefer no server at all? Turn off Connect without a code in the disk’s Settings: then the devices only ever connect by scanning, face to face, as the first time. On a network that blocks direct links, folder lists and small previews pass through the doorbell instead, locked the same way, so it can’t read them. Only a remembered device can ask, with its own key from the disk. Full files never pass through it. The doorbell keeps one thing: when your disk was last online. ## Honest limits - Without a password, files on the disk are normal files: anyone who can use that device can open them. With one, the files and their names are locked; someone looking inside the browser’s storage or the disk folder sees only how many files there are and their sizes. - Lose both the password and the recovery key, and nobody (us included) can open those files. - Clearing a browser’s site data deletes a disk kept inside that browser. On a computer, the folder option keeps ordinary files. - A remembered device stays trusted until you forget it. - Plan checks run in the browser. That affects payments, never anyone’s files. In the browser, with the devices you have. - No account, no upload - Every file checked - Works offline on a hotspotOpen RoomDisk --- Source: https://roomdisk.com/anywhere/ ## Set it up once - Pair your phone with the disk once at home and tap Allow on the disk. - On the disk, open the ☰ menu › Reach from anywhere and turn it on. - Away from home, open RoomDisk on the phone and tap your disk under Your disks. ## Will it work from your networks? Check now, and again at home: both networks need to allow a direct link. It takes about three seconds and sends nothing about you or your files. ## What you can do from away - Browse folders and thumbnails - Stream videos and music from the disk - Send new photos home as you take them - Download what you need - Big files wait for Wi-Fi, so your mobile data is spared ## What it is, and isn’t It’s a direct, private connection to your own device, not cloud storage: nothing is stored anywhere else, and only devices you paired in person can connect. The disk at home has to be on, online and showing RoomDisk. That makes it a private alternative to remote-desktop tools and cloud sync for one job: getting at your own photos and files while you’re out. Some networks (many mobile carriers, strict office or hotel Wi-Fi) block direct links: there RoomDisk shows your folders and small previews, and the rest waits for another Wi-Fi. What the check’s result means, and what to try. ## How it works - At home, your storage disk (a computer, tablet or old phone) runs RoomDisk with Reach from anywhere on. - Your phone was paired there once in person and allowed on the disk, so the two share a secret. - Away from home, the phone sends a short message locked with that secret through RoomDisk’s relay. The relay passes it along but can’t read it. - The devices then open a direct, encrypted link, like a video call, and your files go straight between them. Nothing is stored on a server. ## Who it’s for - A personal cloud without a monthly bill: an old laptop at home holds your library, your phone reaches it. How to set it up. - Owners of drives that lost remote access, like older WD My Cloud models. Your options. - Families in more than one home: one family disk everyone’s paired phones can reach. Sharing between homes. - A locked copy at a relative’s home that they look after but can’t open. Off-site backup. ## Private by design - Only devices paired in person and allowed on the disk can connect; others are turned away. - Only paying devices get a ticket for the relay; it can’t read the messages it passes along. - Files travel end to end encrypted, directly between your devices. - Remove a device under Devices on the disk and it’s cut off at once. More on security. ## Anywhere or Pro? | Pro | Anywhere | Price | $14.99 once | $29 a year | Send, browse, stream on the same Wi-Fi or hotspot | Yes | Yes | Reconnect without a code at home | Yes | Yes | Reach the disk from other networks | No | Yes | Keep a mirror disk in another home | No | Yes | ## Questions before you buy - Can I try it first? Yes: run the network check above at home and on mobile data, and pair your devices for free. - Does it use much data? Browsing is light. Big files wait for Wi-Fi unless you choose otherwise. - What if I stop paying? Your files stay on your disk, as ordinary files. To keep using RoomDisk, renew Anywhere or switch to Pro ($14.99 once) for everything on the same Wi-Fi. ## Setting up the disk at home so it’s always reachable - Use a device that stays at home and on: an old laptop or desktop is ideal, a tablet on a charger works too. - Set it never to sleep while plugged in; leave RoomDisk open with Disk mode on. - Put it on a wired connection or near the router: your upload speed is what you’ll feel from outside. - Check it once from outside the house before you rely on it. Get Anywhere · $29/year ## Questions **Is this cloud storage?** No. Your files stay on your spare disk at home. Anywhere lets your other devices connect to it from other networks, directly and privately. **Does the disk need to be on?** Yes. RoomDisk must be open on the disk device and online, with Reach from anywhere turned on. **Which devices can connect?** Only devices you paired in person and allowed on the disk. Others are turned away. **Will it work on every network?** Most home and public Wi-Fi does. Some networks (many mobile carriers, strict office or hotel Wi-Fi) block direct links between devices: there you still see your folders and small previews, and opening, saving and sending wait for another Wi-Fi. Check your network on this page before you buy. **Does it use my mobile data?** Only a little, for browsing. Big files wait for Wi-Fi: on Android RoomDisk holds them, and on iPhone it asks first. ## Try it with the two devices you havePay once, keep it. Nothing to install, no account.
